The Sri Radha Govinda Temple offers courses on
the art of ancient Vedic cooking. In English we sometimes hear:
“You are what you eat”. This is certainly a fact and
those who have tried different diets will testify to this. A vegetarian
diet is considered a diet in the mode of goodness. This is called
Sattva Guna in Sanskrit. Such foods include Fruits, Vegetables,
Grains, Milk Products, Beans, Nuts etc. It is stated that if one
wants to advance in spiritual realization he must be situated in
the mode of goodness. Only from the mode of goodness can one actually
come to the joyful spiritual platform.
The Knowledge of food is not just of recipes but
is a science of living. In Sanskrit this is known as Ayurveda. Pure
foods enable the body and mind to perform at its best thereby removing
any impediments of health. The sublime knowledge of this science
is elaborately mentioned in the Vedas. In order to perfectly receive
this Knowledge one should obtain this from a bona fide spiritual
master. Such Knowledge of the Vedas was taught widely by Srila Prabhupada,
a bona fide spiritual master in disciplic succession and the founder
of the International society for Krishna Consciousness. So the classes
will enable you to learn this wonderful art of vegetarian cooking,
as has been practiced for thousands of years.
There are 3 classes given once a week for 3 consecutive
weeks. Each class lasts for about 2-3 hours. However, an alternative
schedule can possibly be worked out. After taking these classes
you will be able to prepare an opulent vegetarian feast as if you
have had years of experience.
It is a real ‘Hands On’ Cooking class,
so one isn’t merely observing and then expected to go home
and repeat the recipe. You will personally get to take part in the
different procedures and will be guided through them. Everyone will
get a copy of the recipes being cooked that day. You will also experience
the art of cooking as per Vedic standards. This includes cooking
clean in body and mind, not tasting the preps while being prepared
and not excessively smelling what is later to be offered to the
Lord for His satisfaction.
The climax of the cooking class is putting a beautiful
plate together to offer to the Lord. The unoffered food stuffs upon
being offered become spiritualized and transforms into Prasadam
(The Lords mercy). The food is then honored to full satisfaction.
